Tyres are the only point of contact your vehicle has with the road. With a contact patch that is no larger than the palm of your hand, it is important that you regularly check the condition of your tyres. Worn tyres significantly impede the performance of your car - low tread depths reduce the effectiveness of braking, steering, and acceleration, all of which are vital in staying safe.
The legal limit of the tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the centre ¾ of the tyre and around the entire circumference. For each illegal tyre you could face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on your driving license. Even though the legal limit is 1.6mm, it is recommended to change them earlier. The more tread there is on a tyre, the more grip the tyre will have.
If you are unsure, then just pop into one of our branches and our fully trained staff will be able to advise you
Check tyre pressures once a week, if you are unsure of the correct pressure, take a look in the vehicle handbook or sometimes it can be printed on the back of the fuel filler cap, or just pop into one of our branches. Always remember to check your tyre pressures when they are cold, wait an hour after driving.
Driving with incorrectly inflated tyres can seriously affect the handling of your vehicle and cause premature tyre wear. Over inflated tyres will cause the central part of the tread to wear prematurely, under inflated tyres will cause the outer parts of the tread to wear prematurely.
An unbalanced wheel can cause dangerous mechanical damage through vibrations. We at Discount Tyres will always balance your wheel after replacing your tyre.
Even if you never use your spare it is still vital that you check that it is in good condition. Check the pressure and the tyre tread periodically. It is better to discover any problems in a safe and comfortable environment, i.e. at home rather than by the roadside.
Tyre replacement and checking services are offered at our service centres in Cardiff, Newport and Cwmbran.
